It seems like every year that there is some sort of scandal associated with the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show.

This year's show featuring Bruno Mars, with a guest appearance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has been widely praised as one of the best until now.

It has been revealed that the Red Hot Chili Peppers weren't actually playing their instruments during their hit song "Give It Away."

Flea, the zany bassist for the group, explained why he was playing air guitar on the band's blog Tuesday night.

He says that the NFL did not want live instruments as part of the show because they were afraid that something would go wrong.

He insists though that frontman Anthony Kiedis really was singing.

Flea also says that there was "a lot of confusion" amongst the band when they were told they would not actually be playing. But, they eventually decided to do it because the band members are huge football fans.

In the past, the band has been known for refusing to fake it and was once even kicked off of a show in the U.K. because they refused to "mime" their performance.

Flea also said that they would "do it all the same way again."

The speculation began about the band faking their performance started when Vernon Reid of the band Living Colour' sent the following tweet:

This year's Super Bowl set a new television audience record with 111.5 million viewers, according to New York Daily News. That is more viewers than last year's performance by Beyonce or Madonna's halftime show.
