Broadway’s ‘Lion King’ cast surprises NYC subway riders

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED Aug 8, 2014

To help promote Broadway’s “The Lion King” as “New York City’s most spectacular surprise,” the cast recently dressed in street clothes during a break between shows and took a ride on the city’s subway. Scattered throughout a train car, the cast, including children, then surprised commuters by launching into a performance of “The Circle of Life.” Turns out, a subway car has surprisingly good acoustics.

Of course, the whole thing was captured on video, and since being posted to YouTube on August 5 has already gotten more than 1.8 million views. As the YouTube description explains, “Last year the NYC subway served over 1 billion riders, and last year The Lion King became Broadway's first $1 billion show.”

Among the viewer comments posted on the video is one that reads, “This would make my day. Unless I had a hangover.”

The Tony Award-winning musical runs eight times a week at the Minskoff Theater in Times Square.
