Sedgwick County opens new fire station
Sedgwick County officials had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to open a new fire station for the Derby area. The station, located at 5055 S. Oliver, will provide fire coverage for the southeast part of the county.
The station cost $1.7 million. It will have a response area of 80 square miles. Under an automatic aid agreement, the station will provide assistance to the Derby Fire Department, McConnell Air Force Base and Butler County Fire District 3, which is based in Rose Hill.
This is the fifth of six new fire stations for the county under a relocation plan developed in 2004. The sixth and final station, Station 34 in Haysville, is scheduled to open next spring.
When the relocation plan is completed, 78 percent of Sedgwick County's Fire District 1 will be within five miles of a fire station. That is up from 47 percent when the relocation project began. The improved coverage will help lower fire insurance premiums for homeowners in rural areas of the county.
