Sedgwick County jail to get upgraded security camera system

CREATED Nov. 13, 2013

Sedgwick County commissioners have voted to move ahead with a project to improve the security camera system within the county jail.   Commissioners added the project to the county's capital improvement program and then approved a low bid of $5.5 million for the project.

The project will replace technology that is 20 to 25 years old, and the current system has had problems with system crashes and replacement of parts.   The project will upgrade and replace door control systems and additional video cameras will be added.

The county's facilities director, Steve Claassen, said the project will be phased in over a year and a half, and it won't require prisoners to be relocated.    He said it would take about a year and a half to finish the upgrade.

Commissioner Tim Norton said the upgrade will improve safety in the jail and it will also help the county in dealing with any litigation that may be filed over jail operations.
