Obama not deploying troops in Iraq despite 'stunning' insurgency

By Associated Press. CREATED Jun 13, 2014

U.S. combat troops won't be returning to Iraq. That option is being ruled out by President Barack Obama -- but he says he's considering a range of other options for dealing with the violent Islamic insurgency there. The last U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq in 2011 after more than eight years of war.

Soldiers and commanders who served in the long Iraq war are struggling to make sense of this week's stunning gains by insurgents in places they once fought to protect -- like Mosul and Fallujah. Many of those vets are now reflecting with bitterness and frustration on the sacrifices of a war that killed nearly 4,500 Americans. Army Col. Barry Johnson, who is now retired and living in Idaho, says the losses make the war feel like a waste of lives.
