Obama marijuana policy confusing to some

By Associated Press. CREATED Feb 4, 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) Figuring out where the Obama administration stands on marijuana is starting to get as confusing as remembering which one is Cheech and which one is Chong.

The White House-run Office of National Drug Control Policy says marijuana is a dangerous drug. But President Barack Obama recently told The New Yorker magazine that he doesn't think marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol. Obama has acknowledged smoking pot in his younger days.

But then there's the Drug Enforcement Administration policy: marijuana is a top tier, illegal drug under federal law.

So what's the government's position? That's what members of Congress want to know and they're pressing Michael Botticelli, deputy director of the drug-control agency, for an answer at a House subcommittee hearing on Tuesday.
