Lost hunter survived on squirrels and lizards

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The daughter-in-law of the 72-year-old hunter who was lost for more than two weeks in a Northern California forest says he had his rifle with him and used it to shoot squirrels and other animals he ate to stay alive.

Deborah Penaflor said Monday outside her father-in-law's San Francisco home that the experienced deer hunter also had a lighter. Authorities say the man, Gene Penaflor, hit his head and passed out in the Mendocino National Forest during a deer hunting trip last month and then survived on squirrels, lizards and a snake while awaiting rescue.
Deborah Penaflor says her father-in-law suffered a gash on his chin and upper lip.
He was rescued Saturday. Deborah Penaflor said his voice, however, was tired from telling his story so many times, and he wouldn't immediately be doing any interviews.
