Wichita City Council honors Karla Burns
Wichita native Karla Burns was honored at Tuesday's Wichita City Council meeting for her career in opera and music theater.
Mayor Carl Brewer presented Burns with a proclamation declaring Karla Burns Week, Dec. 17-24. Brewer said Burns' birthday is Christmas Eve.
Burns has been nominated for Tony awards, and she was the first African-American to win Great Britain's Olivier Award for her performance in a revival of "Show Boat." She told the audience she is glad to be back in Wichita, where her roots are.
Burns performed Christmas songs to open the council meeting, and she received a bouquet and a standing ovation from the audience.
After the performance, she told Brewer that "Next time, I'm going to sing 'Santa, Baby' to you. You're my Santa Baby!"
