Winston Brooks, superintendent of schools in Albuquerque, NM, announced Friday he was resigning his post.
Brooks served as superintendent of Wichita schools for almost 10 years, ending when he took the job in Albuquerque in 2008.
The move comes as the Albuquerque school board met earlier in the week to discuss a personnel matter involving Brooks.
In a statement released Friday, the school board and Brooks say both sides agreed to the parting of ways.
"The decision to end the employment relationship will allow both the board and Brooks to establish a new direction," the statement says. "Both agree that this is the best option at this time."
You may recall Brooks was suspended three days last year for a questionable tweet about the New Mexico's Education Secretary.
The Albuquerque school district is one of the largest in the country, with about 86,000 students.
