Pigs raised to taste like whiskey in Iowa
Templeton Rye Distillery in Iowa is testing its first batch of pigs raised to taste like whiskey. The experiment is referred to as the Templeton Rye Pork Project. And no, the pigs aren't drinking whiskey themselves.
Born in January 2014, 25 purebred Duroc pigs are currently being used for this project while "eating a distinct diet that incorporates the dry distillery grain from the whiskey-making process into the feed," reports WQAD 8. “This is something somebody is going to do, and we want to be at the cutting edge of it, and I think we are,” says Keith Kerkhoff, distillery co-founder.
"Kerkhoff says they’re already getting a variety of inquiries about the pigs, from backyard pit masters to famous restaurant owners like Chicago’s Stephanie Izard, winner of ‘Top Chef,'" further reports WQAD 8.
A whiskey pork tasting will be held in late June for the Templeton Rye Bootleggers Society.
