A senior at Cherryville High School in Cherryville, N.C., was asked to leave her senior prom because of her wardrobe choice. No, she was not wearing an inappropriate dress, nor was any skin showing. Shafer Rupard was wearing pants.
"The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing," Rupard tells WBTV. "I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I'll take those off and she was like no, it's the pants."
There was no dress code noted on either the prom invitation or the student code of conduct book.
"It's just the way she's always been and she wanted to feel comfortable in her own skin," Shawn McQuaige, Rupard's mother, explains to WBTV. "We want to put out the message to all teenagers that you should be allowed to be yourself."
Rupard has not received an apology after being dismissed from her senior prom.
