Understanding the Enhanced Fujita Scale
KFAQ Storm Team
TULSA (KFAQ) - You have heard weather experts describing the recent tornadoes as EF-3, EF-4 or EF-5, but do you know what that means?
The EF stands for Enhanced Fujita Scale or EF Scale and since February of 2007 has been used to assign a tornado a 'rating' based on estimated wind speeds and related damage. When tornado-related damage is surveyed, it is compared to a list of Damage Indicators and Degrees of Damage which help estimate better the range of wind speeds the tornado likely produced. From that, a rating (from EF0 to EF5) is assigned.
