OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A man sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a Sallisaw woman to death has lost his appeal before the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals.
The court Wednesday upheld the first-degree murder conviction of 46-year-old Leon Markel Winston.
Winston was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole for the Sept. 27, 2008, death of 62-year-old Darla Caughman at her home in Sequoyah County.
Authorities say Cunningham was beaten and stabbed to death. Investigators used DNA evidence to link Winston to the crime. Officials say Winston and Caughman knew each other but weren't friends.
Authorities say Winston has an extensive criminal record in Kentucky and North Carolina. Defense attorney Tracy Quick of the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
