House clears expansion of movie tax rebate

CREATED Apr 17, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Oklahoma House has approved a measure to double the money available as tax incentives for movie and commercial producers who film in the state.

The bill would increase the funding from $5 million to $10 million, if enough money is available. It would decrease the rebate to each film company to one-fourth of the money the company spends within the state.

The House narrowly approved the bill 55-30. It goes back to the Senate because the House added amendments.

Republican Rep. Earl Sears of Bartlesville carried the measure, but some of the strongest opposition came from his fellow Republicans. Rep. David Dank of Oklahoma City called the proposal a ``bucket of manure'' that would take money away from other Oklahoma businesses and state priorities like education.
