NAPLES, Fla.- We are telling you something good tonight. A Cape Coral World War II Veteran enjoyed a birthday surprise after his daughter made some special plans. His daughter drove him to the Naples airport and told her father not to ask any questions while they drove from Cape Coral to Naples.
Paula Wieland brought her father Roger Wieland to the airport to enjoy a plane ride around Naples. Wieland first took up flying after he served in World War II.
"He was very surprised. He had no idea. We live in Cape Coral and it took bout an hour and 20 minutes to get here. The whole way he didn't ask me any questions. That was my only request...get in and don't ask me anything," said Paula Wieland, daughter.
The pilot, Richard Mellon, flew Wieland around for more than 30 minutes checking out places like Cape Romano from the sky. It's a day that carries a special meaning for Mellon.
"August 14th is my father's birthday. He passed away several years ago. My father was a World War II flight instructor. He taught me how to fly," said Mellon.
Mellon adds he has taken other veterans out in the past. It's his way of saying "thank you" to those men and women who served our country.
