CAPE CORAL, Fla. - What's in a name? Apparently enough to get you talking after Edison State College gets a new name, Florida Southwestern State College.
"The opportunity is now. It is the right time to change our name," said the school's president, Jeff Allbritten.
After 50 years, the board of trustees decided to re-brand to avoid a lawsuit from a college in New Jersey with a similar name but not everyone is taking to it.
"It'll be a little hard to get used to," said one student.
The new name comes with a helm as its logo and silver and purple as its colors but neither seems to convince many of you to come around to it. One caller said, "I think it would be most disrespectful to Edison and to Fort Myers to change their school name."
Bonnie from Fort Myers offered another suggestion for a name. "it's too long, has nothing to do with lee county or Fort Myers...how about Edison Ford College.. it's short, has something to do with lee county."
Ricky wrote on Facebook, "I think it lessens the integrity of a college when they need to change their image."
Scott wrote an email stating, "Florida Southwestern College sounds an awful lot like Southwest Florida College."
The name change officially takes effect on July 1, 2014 pending the governor's signature.
