For the National Hurricane Center, August 1, is the time when things go from serious to extra serious.
Historically, the month of August sees a great increase in tropical activity, due to warming waters, and sometimes favorable upper level winds.
While welcome dry air has been coming off the coast of Africa, keeping the inter-tropical convergence zone quiet, long range computer models show favorable conditions for tropical development in the Gulf next week.
