Tracking the Tropics: Two waves
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - There are two areas of interest that we are monitoring; the first is a tropical wave in the western Caribbean, the second has just moved off the west coast of Africa.
The tropical wave in the western Caribbean is generating disorganized showers & thunderstorms extending from Central America to Jamaica & Eastern Cuba. The environmental conditions do look conducive for some development over the next couple of days as it continues moving to the northwest at 10-15 mph towards the Yucatan Peninsula.
The upper level winds over the Gulf of Mexico could hamper any additional development over the weekend giving this system a medium chance (30%) of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next 5 days.
The low pressure system located a few hundred miles east-southeast of the Cape Verde Islands has become a little better organized during the past few hours and environmental conditions appear favorable for additional development during the next couple of days.
It will encounter drier air and cooler water in the open waters of the Atlantic which may limit development. This system has a medium (50%) chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 5 days.
