SWFL Federal lawmakers sounding off about U.S. action in Syria

CREATED Sep. 4, 2013

NAPLES, Fla.-  The United States is one step closer to striking Syria. Wednesday, a key Senate committee voted to support President Obama's call for military action after chemical weapons were used to kill 1,400 people including more than 400 children.

SWFL Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart visited Ave Maria University's School of Law where he said the United States doesn't have a strong enough plan to strike Syria.

" Ideally I would want to stand shoulder two shoulder with the President if and when the President is going to commit to our military." Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R) Fl 25th District said.

Congressman Trey Radel said he will vote "no" to action against Syria. In a statement he said :

"The President has not made the case that America must get involved in the ongoing Syrian civil war. Currently, there  is no direct or even indirect threat to the United States, our interests or our allies."

Florida Senator Marco Rubio said he also plans to vote against the plan in a statement he said:

"While I have long argued forcefully for engagement in empowering the Syrian people, I have never supported to use of U.S. military force in the conflict."

Congressman Diaz-Balart said the President has to convince the American people, not just Congress.

" If he wants congressional approval it's time for the President to make clear and convincing argument to the American people." Diaz-Balart said.

Congressman Diaz-Balart  said other countries who support Syria's government could get involved if the United States strikes.

" What would be Russia's response what would be Iran's response? Consequences could be just as bad if not worse as if the President says he's going to do something then doesn't." Diaz-Balart said.

Florida Congressman Tom Rooney also said he is against striking Syria. The only Democrat representing SWFL in Washington, Senator Bill Nelson said he is in favor of taking military action.
