NAPLES, Fla.- Residents at several apartment complexes in Naples paid rent for July, but found out the apartment never got their money.
"I put it in the drop box and 4 or 5 days later I have a notice on my door saying our rent was late," said Katherine Houston, a resident who had rent stolen.
Dozens of checks and money orders were stolen out of drop boxes at 3 apartment complexes, according to incident reports from the Collier County Sheriff's Office. Those complexes include: Bermuda Isle Apartments, Laguna Bay and Summer Wind Apartments. More than 40 people had money missing.
"i was shocked, shocked. I was one of the lucky ones," said one Laguna Bay resident.
So how were the checks taken? According to the incident report from Summer Wind Apartments, the drop box was not damaged to gain access to the checks. Victims Fox 4 spoke with think the thieves just reached inside and grabbed them.
"They need to somehow create a drop box that is located on the building where if you put money it goes inside the building where the doors are locked and they can't reach inside of it," said Houston.
Fox called all 3 apartment complexes to see if changes would be made. Bermuda Isle Apartments now has a notice on its drop box telling residents to use a different drop box. The apartment complex would not comment. Fox is still waiting to hear back from the other property managers. Victims say they are watching their accounts.
"I did call the bank and let them know that my account information was stolen so if there's any red flags that they were looking for it."
The sheriff's office is still investigating. Victims Fox 4 spoke with say they were able to cancel the check before money was stolen out of their accounts.
