Record number of children get forever home in mass adoption event

FORT MYERS, Fla. - With 125 kids in Southwest Florida waiting to be adopted, Saturday was a day for celebration.

A record number of 20 children were officially adopted into their forever homes at a massive adoption celebration at the Lee County Courthouse.

Stacy and Cassandra Rogers welcomed three children into their family.

"We were looking to adopt one, but we got lucky and we got a complete family of three," Cassandra Rogers said.

Six-year-old Mackenzey, five-year-old Cory and three-year-old Mallerey are biological siblings lucky enough to end up in the same home.

Cassandra Rogers grew up in the foster system in Michigan and when she couldn't have children of her own, she decided to give back to the community.

"At my age and never being a mother before, can I handle it? It's a challenge, but everyday you take it day by day and it's an adventure everyday too," Cassandra Rogers said.

The first part of the Rogers' adventure came to a close Saturday when they stood in front of a judge who finalized the adoption.

"To have one whole day set aside for nothing but families and adoption, to be part of other families adopting and feel that group mentality, there's nothing like it in the world," said Aimee McLaughlin, the Director of Communications and Development for Children's Network of Southwest Florida.

McLaughlin stresses the importance of looking locally when searching for the right child to adopt.

"We have children in foster care that need to be adopted, you don't have to go out of state or out of the country. You have kids in your own neighborhood that need help," McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin says 40 of the 125 kids in need of a home in Southwest Florida don't have a prospective home yet.
