LABELLE, Fla. - A Facebook page chronicling the fight of a LaBelle's boy against a deadly infection in his brain is offering a glimmer of hope today.
12-year-old Zachary Reyna contracted a rare brain-eating parasite that kills 99% of those affected.
This afternoon a family member posted that the antibiotics given Zac in a Miami hospital has stopped the infection. The posting says tests show negative activity from the amoeba.
The family also reports that the amoeba has done extensive damage to Zac's brain.
Only three people who have contracted the parasite have survived.
Also announced this afternoon, Friday night's football game between LaBelle High School and Immokalee High School will serve as a fundraiser for Reyna.
The game at Immokalee High School kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
