PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A southwest Florida family dealing with a devastating loss after a fire tears through their home. Now the problems continue; as assistance winds down, the family is running out of options.
"We were trying to salvage what we could salvage"
Jacqueline Small tells Fox 4 as she picks through whats left in her Port Charlotte home.
"Gone. Gone. Everything gone. Everything in the closet, destroyed. All of my clothes."
She points out where fire fighters say the inferno began, a lonely power strip that looks hardly scathed by the fire
"So once that sparked and lit the carpet, everything went"
The one silver lining? No one was home.
"I was hurt, upset. Because I knew everything that I owned was here. So...
Reporter: What do you do from here?
I have... keep praying. Keep praying and take it day"
Those days, spent crashing on couches, charity is running out. So I reached out to the United Way of Southwest Florida to find help for Jacqueline and her three kids. They put me in touch with the Bread of Life Mission in Punta Gorda, who was more than happy to talk with Jacqueline.
They found a temporary home for her, but there was one area they couldn't help with.
"I want my doggies"
Jacqueline tells me her three dogs were taken to a Charlotte County animal shelter, but if she doesn't find somewhere to keep them soon, the shelter will keep the dogs as abandoned property.
For now, Jacqueline is focusing on the positive.
"We'll all be back together with our dogs"
