MATLACHA, Fla. – The renovation on the new matlacha bridge is almost complete. But people who like to fish off of it say it seems a little more crowded than usual. And they want to know if this bridge is narrower than the last one.
It's a great way to kick back on a friday night..... Relaxing and waiting......waiting for something to hit your bait and take off with it. Locals affectionately call it 'The World's Fishingest Bridge'.
They bring their wagons, their tack, the rods and even bait tanks. And they put it all on the walkway where they fish. Some people have called us saying people have trouble walking past all the gear and all the fishermen and others have called us wanting to know why a new bridge was built and why the walkway's were not made wider?
"Yea, sometimes it is hard when you have people coming from the bar, they might be a little on the edge,” said Jimmy Webb, who has fished on the bridge for three years. “They could have probably widened it just a little bit more so everyone can get around fishing poles and stuff."
Josh Jones just moved here from Indiana and loves it. "Some nights there'll be like 30 or 40 people out here fishing but everybody's cordial, everybody will move out of the way," he said.
But is it any wider? “I really can't tell a difference," said Brandon Austenberg. According to the lee county department of transportation it is. The old bridge was 5 feet one inch wide. Now it's five feet two inches wide. And it has several very wide areas specifically designed for fishing.
