NAPLES, Fla. - A Naples man and former Indy race car driver has been arrested for hundreds of counts of possession of child pornography. 43-year-old Jon Herb faces 246 counts of child pornography and two counts of sexual battery on a child.
Robert Zlobl, who lives a few doors down from Herb, said he was shocked.
"[They're] very nice, social people, just the average person next door," Zlobl said. "You would never ever suspect anything was amiss."
Zlobl said Herb and his family moved into the gated Naples community, next to the Ritz-Carlton, about six months ago.
"It's just so shocking, it's hardest for the family," Zlobl said.
According to the arrest affidavit, Herb's wife opened her husband's laptop and saw websites opened with underage nude girls. After searching further, she found pictures of her husband engaging in sexual acts with an underage girl. She turned over the laptop to Collier County Sheriffs Office deputies, who performed further analysis and discovered 243 pictures of child pornography and three videos, all with the same victim.
Psychotherapist Dr. Christopher Seavey, PhD, said there is no blueprint for a sex offender.
"It is not a specific type of person, it's across all socio-economic groups," Seavey said.
The only commonality across sex offenders is a history of abuse as a child.
It's uncertain if this was true of Herb's past, but it's not uncertain that this former Indy racer let down a community of race fans.
"As a racer, it's humiliating because we have somebody among our own ranks who's got absolutely no regard for, it seems, anything," said Rich Sander.
Herb is being held on $2,460,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 28th.
