NAPLES, Fla.- A Naples woman was allegedly robbed my criminals posing as plumbers.Naples police said the woman fell victim to what is called a distracted burglary. On Tuesday, a so-called plumber came to Danielle Oosterbaan's Naples home, kept her occupied while an accomplice swooped in and allegedly stole her expensive jewelry.
"He said my men are working and I think they had an accident and may have hit one of your water pipes." Oosterbaan said.
Oosterbaan said the middle-aged, heavy set, Hispanic man claimed to be a plumber and insisted on coming inside her home. She said she let the man in and led him back to the water heater in her garage where he instructed her to bang on the pipes with a golf club to check for rust. During that time, Danielle said during that time, the man was on the phone talking to someone, but left within minutes.
" He said water is clear I'm going, he left so fast, so fast." Oosterbaan said.
Oosterbaan said she was on the phone with her mom the entire time but couldn't get her attention to warn her of the suspicious visitor.
"My daughter said to me, Mama you've been robbed go in your bedroom check your purse and check your jewelry immediately." Oosterbaan said.
She discovered diamonds,Ruby's, all kinds of precious gems that now serve as memories of her late husband are now gone.
" It was all jewelry my husband bought me we were married 54 years." Oosterbaan said.
Naples Police Lt. John Barkley said these types of thieves aren't un-common.
" In the city of Naples, our water workers are very well uniformed and have identification that shows who they work for as do most utility companies in the area and they'll let someone know if they're legitimate." Lt. Barkley said.
Oosterbaan said crooks may have made off with her valuables but they haven't taken her sense of security.
"I'm not going to let anyone of those guys throw me out of my own house. I'm not going to change my way of living." Oosterbaan said.
No suspects have been taken into custody so if you notice anything suspicious going on in your neighborhood call them right away.
