NAPLES, Fla. - The Florida Highway Patrol says alcohol played a role in a four vehicle crash that injured seven people and left eastbound Pine Ridge Road closed for nearly two hours Monday night.
The FHP says 18-year-old Michael Simmons was driving his Ford pickup east on Pine Road Road. Investigators say Simmons drove through the intersection at I-75 striking a Toyota Camry stopped at the red light.
Simmons was driving so fast that he hit the windshield of his truck causing him to depress the accelerator sending his truck into two other vehicles.
His pickup first hit a one way sign and then destroyed a traffic control box entering the northbound inside turn lane where his pickup hit a Chrysler minivan and a Toyota pickup.
Remarkably of the seven injured including Simmons, six suffered only minor injuries.
Only 62-year-old John Beers of Naples, the driver of the Camry, suffered serious injuries.
Simmons faces multiple charges of DUI with injuries, careless driving, a probation violation and resisting arrest without violence.
