MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - A crash in Manatee County Sunday killed an 8-year-old girl and seriously injured four others including a couple from Arcadia.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened east of I-75 on State Road 70, just west of Curtis Road around 4 p.m.
The FHP says a SUV driven by 31-year-old Devin Gilmore of Arcadia lost control and drove over the median, hitting another car head on. Gilmore was seriously injured along with his passenger, 29-year-old Allison Gilmore.
The little girl that died, Sierra Proulx, was riding in the car with 43-year-old Kevin Moore and 42-year-old Melanie Proulx, all from Bradenton. Moore and Proulx were both seriously injured as well.
It took five helicopters to transport all of the victims.
Troopers temporarily shut down the road in both directions as rescuers tended to the injured and aircraft landed and departed.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation but troopers say speed may have been a factor.
