IMMOKALEE, Fla. - Now that you can begin enrolling for Obamacare, do you know where to go to get help? Few places in Southwest Florida are offering answers, but Fox Four found one of them. Redlands Christian Migrant Association in Immokalee has an official Obamacare "navigator," someone trained to answer your questions about enrollment, though only a few people came in today with questions.
"I'm excited people are actually going to have an opportunity to get insurance," said navigator Taimi Hernandez.
Most people who came in with questions asked about what health care options and prices apply to them.
Before getting her navigator certification, Hernandez had to complete a 20-hour online training course covering topics such as customer service, how to talk with people, and the broad array of information- from plans to prices- covered through the Affordable Care Act.
Hernandez said she feels comfortable answering people's questions and if she doesn't have the answer, she knows how to find it quickly on the www.healthcare.gov website.
Tijuana Clemons, Regional Health Specialist at Redlands Christian Migrant Association, hired Hernandez as the navigator because she's from the Immokalee community and relates to the people who live there.
"We just want to be that face of the uninsured and let them know we are here... we are here to assist and we are here to answer any questions you may have and direct you in whatever direction you choose," Clemons said.
Currently, Hernandez is a certified navigator, but until her license physically arrives through the mail, she can't enroll people for insurance. Instead, she's focused on educating people about Obamacare and letting people know she's there to help.
"I'm really proud that I get to be that person because I've grown up here all my life," Hernandez said. "I want this to succeed... I know it's a big thing but I want it to actually work and for everybody to actually get health insurance."
