Fort Myers, Fla. - The Lee County Sheriff's Office is in its second summer of providing free swim lessons and free access to Tice communuty pool. The pool is open as a part of the LCSO Youth Activities League, where deputies are off the streets and in the water.
Four year old Nazir Whitehead answering us says,
"You like the pool?" Nazir: "Yup"
"Are you having fun?"
But he has more important things to do than a lengthy TV interview
He;s ready to get back out on his kickboard with his grandpa for a Saturday full of swimming. His Grandpa Earl Cuff says about Nazir,
"Enjoyed having him with us, and it seemed he enjoyed being with us"
The scene at the pool today was a lot more than just splashing and laughing, here Lee County Sheriff Deputies are trading in their uniforms for swim trunks. LCSO Lieutenant Vaughn tells us
"What we're doing is obviously building a bigger bridge, between law enforcement and the Tice community. Because the kids need us out here."
This is the second summer for law enforcement and lifeguards to open up the Tice community pool, one day a week.
"We're teaching basic safety, water safety. We're teaching them how to swim, and how to get familiar with the water - not be afraid of it."
Earl Cuff adds
"Some people don't have the transportation to make it out the beach, or don't have the money to go take the kids swimming. So I think its wonderful, myself"
All of the fun, is free. Lt Vaughn says
"What is tells the community is the Sheriff's office cares about the Tice communit, and not just the Tice community but any community."
The change from patrolling problem areas to now patrolling the pool, from the looks of it is paying off.
We asked a bunch of swimmers
"You guys having fun out here?"
And Earl Cuff agrees
"You can't beat it, can't beat it"
LCSO partnered with Nation's Association, Lee County Parks and Recreation, and the Lee County School District to open the pool. Nexy Saturday August 3rd will be the last day for the program, until next summer.
