PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Punta Gorda police needed help from a Jedi to arrest a reckless driver.

The Punta Gorda Police Department says an officer tried to stop a speeder just before 10 p.m. Tuesday after the officer observed the driver reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour in a 55 zone. The driver was also swerving recklessly in and out of lanes.

The driver, Charles Stevens, 45, of Port Charlotte, eventually came to a stop at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Zemel Rd. When the officer got Stevens out of the car, he says Stevens smelled of alcohol and refused the orders of the officer.

The officer tried to handcuff Stevens, but he continued to resist so the officer used a taser to try and subdue him. Stevens continued to fight and kicked one officer in the stomach. That's when Canine Jedi was released and bit Stevens on the leg.

Stevens quit fighting and allowed officers to handcuff him and take him into custody where he is now facing multiple criminal charges. He's being held without bond.
