UPDATE: Fatal house fire in Collier County

CREATED Sep. 10, 2013

NAPLES, Fla.- East Naples-Golden Gate Fire District responded to a call shortly before 1:30 am on Tuesday. Flashing lights and sirens woke up neighbors in the homes on Mustang Drive in Lely Resort.

"We heard trucks very very early during the night. My husband got up and said either something happened accident or something on fire," said Betty Williams, neighbor.

The fire department says 87-year-old John Lettich did not make it out of the home. Fox 4 spoke with one neighbor who said he attempted to go inside to help and used several fire extinguishers, but the flames were too powerful. John's wife, 87-year-old Elizabeth Lettich, made it out and was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

"I heard a fireman say fire, fire, get out...broke windows, he was talking to the next door neighbors," said Jean Hartman, neighbor.

"We'd have weekly gatherings at our pools and they would come down, an elderly couple, very sweet couple," said Williams.

The fire department said the home is a total loss.

"Did you see flames?"

"Pouring, when I came over. Pouring out of the front door," said Hartman.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
