Fort Myers, Fla. -
Southwest Florida has its share of visitors every year but it's not often a famous person just, out of the blue, walks into a restaurant and sits down to eat. But that's what happened Sunday night at the Firestone Bar & Grill. And it's not just any famous person, this was the chef at the restaurant's idol! - Famous chef Emeril Lagasse. He had docked his boat downtown and walked up to the Firestone to eat. The chef, Marvin Avilez, was busy preparing meals for all the guests when, at about 7:30, he was told Emeril had just sat down to eat.
Avilez says he became a chef because of Emeril and that he used to record all his cooking shows on a VCR and watch them back to learn how to cook. Needless to day, to him, this was big. "I kinda peeked my head over the salad station and sure enough there he was. So, I didn't want to pretend that I was hiding from him so I went to the bar and he went like this to me, he waved," Avilez described. "So, right away I came to the table. It was like, I couldn't believe that it was him. So, I shook his hands and asked if I can take a picture with him. So, we went behind the bar and took a couple of pictures and the next thing you know there was like 30 customers, everybody taking pictures with him. He was really down to earth and I was like in shock and I'm still in shock."
Avilez waited until Emeril finished his dinner before asking for a picture with him. He also said he asked Emeril what he thought of his cooking and Emeril said it was great! Avilez says he believed him because he ate every bite! How bout that for a thrill?
