Cape Coral family walks one mile to bus stop

CREATED Jul. 31, 2013

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Six-year-old Frank Stanley can't wait to start first grade at Cape Coral Charter School.

But there's one thing he's dreading.

"I wish the bus stop was closer so we wouldn't have to walk really far," Frank says.

Frank's family only has one car and since his dad takes it to work, it's up to mom Kathy to walk Frank from their home on Country Club Boulevard to the bus stop at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 47th Terrace.

"The bus stop is exactly a mile from here, it takes about 20-30 minutes to walk there," Kathy Stanley said.

And part of the road doesn't have a sidewalk or lights. The weather also makes the walk challenging.

"It's very long, I get hot sometimes," Frank said.

Kathy Stanley can't leave Frank's one-year-old brother at home, so he's got to come along too in a stroller.

"So pushing him, trying to focus on him not crying," Stanley said.

Fox 4 drove the route the Stanley's take to the bus stop, and it came out to just shy of a mile.

Cape Coral Charter School said A & S Transportation is in charge of the buses. Stanley said she has contacted them several times, but they always tell her there is nothing they can do.

When Fox 4 called, A & S said the only person authorized to speak to the media wouldn't be available until tomorrow.

But for Stanley, time is running out. If things don't change, she is afraid she will have to take her son out of a school he loves.

"With the weather the way it's going and I don't want to put the safety of my kids in that, it would be something I would have to look into," Stanley said.
