Family of five found dead in apparent murder/suicide inside San Carlos Park home
SAN CARLOS PARK, Fla.- Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott said a family of five were found dead inside a home on 17372 Phlox Drive early Sunday morning.
Scott said a man living at the home called 911 at 2:25 a.m. and deputies responded for a death investigation.
"Our deputies found a horrific and unthinkable scene here with three children killed, the mother killed and the father we believe, the evidence leads us to believe the father was the final death in taking his own life," Scott said.
Sheriff Scott described the scene as "horrific." All of the bodies were suffering from gun shot wounds from a pistol investigators found in the home.
The children were all female, aged 2-10 years old. Officials say they think the father called 911 before turning the gun on himself.
Neighbors say the family looked ordinary.
"I am shocked," Laurie Gretten said. "I am totally shocked because they looked like the nicest, they looked happy all the time. Everyday the little girls are playing in the yard, riding their bikes, adorable."
Neighbors say the family held a party at the home Saturday night. Investigators say the party isn't connected to the shooting.
"I don't know if we will ever know why," Scott said. "There's no set of circumstances of investigations or evidence that will be able to determine why this happened."
Scott says the couple had no criminal history or open cases with the Department of Children and Family Services
