Dolphin rescued near Everglades City

By FOX 4 Staff. CREATED Aug 1, 2014

EVERGLADES CITY, Fla. - A dolphin was swimming where it didn't belong, prompting a rescue Thursday of the mammal dubbed Speedy, for the airboat tour company that spotted him.

The dolphin was found in a small lake northwest of Everglades City.  Speedy was rescued by about 20 members of the Southeast Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network on Thursday.  That group included FWC and Mote Marine Laboratory among others.

It took about four hours to get Speedy out of the lake.  They believe the dolphin got there during high tide and would have had trouble getting out without help.

The rescue was difficult because of knee-deep mud and netting an 8-foot alligator along with the dolphin.

Mote Marine thanked Speedy's airboats and experienced captains who played a big role in the rescue.
