Details emerge from fatal Lehigh Acres crash
LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - Excessive speed and alcohol played a role in a crash that claimed the life of a 43-year-old Lehigh Acres man Wednesday night according to Lee County Sheriff's Office investigators.
Deputies were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash just after 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Schoolside drive and East 3rd Street in Lehigh Acres. When they arrived they found a Dodge Caravan rolled over on its side.
The passenger, 29-year-old Brandy James of Lehigh Acres, had managed to crawl out of the van. Inside Jody Gaylon Tome, the driver was found dead.
Investigators say Tome was driving south on East 3rd Street and tried to negotiate a sweeping left hand curve but was driving to fast and left the road hitting a sign on the side of the road. The van then catapulted back onto the road traveling across all lanes before colliding with a rock barrier sending the van airborne.
The driver was partially ejected and was found not wearing a seatbelt. Tome's head hit the pavement which apparently caused her fatal injuries. The van came to rest after hitting a utility pole.
