NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla.- The northbound off ramp of I-75 at Bayshore Road has been reopened after a deputy involved shooting.
Witnesses tell FOX 4 News that a chase involving the Lee County Sheriff's Office ended with a blue/gray pickup truck going into a ditch. The witness tells FOX 4 that a deputy got out of his vehicle and shot the driver of the pickup.
The man is identified as 23- year- old Matthew Wilson of Fort Myers .
Wilson has a criminal record dating back to 2005 totaling 31 local arrests.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office is only reporting this as an incident involving a stolen vehicle.
"It's clear, even at his relatively young stage of adult life, Matthew Wilson has no respect for the law, the citizens of Lee County or the judicial system," said Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott. "His actions today show the reckless disregard for life and stand as an illustration -- for the second time this week -- of the dangers our deputies face when they valiantly put on the badge each day."
Detectives with the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit continue the investigation into today's events. Charges are pending further investigation and are likely to include aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and grand theft auto.
Wilson will be booked into the Lee County Jail
