LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. -- A morning crash along State Road 82 at the intersection of Sunshine Boulevard has many drivers questioning the safety of State Road 82. The intersection does not have a stoplight, so drivers pull onto State Road 82 in front of other drivers traveling at speeds of 60 mph.
Workers at the Shell Gas Station, located on the corner of Sunshine Boulevard and State Road 82, said they see two to three accidents each week.
"82 is probably the worst road I've ever had to drive on," said motorcyclist Joe Kendrick.
Accidents at this intersection hit close to home for Joel Kamenoff, whose friend died in a crash at the same spot two years ago.
"They should at least have flashing yellow lights ahead of time and the speed limit reduced to 45," Kamenoff said.
Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Debbie Tower said widening State Road 82 is a priority for the department. Currently, highway officials are in the design phase of the project, which won't be completed for at least five more years.
Tower said she will see if FDOT officials can do a speed study of the area to determine if speed limits need to be lowered.
Fox 4 will continue to follow this story and let you know if the study is arranged.
