Council approves concert dates for Naples Jazz Orchestra

NAPLES, Fla.- The Naples City Council approved special events at Wednesday's meeting. For the last 4 years, The Naples Jazz Orchestra has brought music to Cambier Park on Monday nights, but the orchestra worried for weeks the concert series could be silenced.
"We have been asked if we can go somewhere else, but the attraction for us is we need a professional band shell. The only other one I'm aware of is in Bonita Springs," said Pamela Carey, The Naples Jazz Orchestra President and Orchestra Manager.
Naples city leaders worried about parking problems and whether the city could handle big concert crowds. Music leaders had asked for permission to use the city's park months ago.
"Normally music schedules, not only ours, but other musical organizations schedules are approved early in the summer," said Lex Tsaggaris, VP of The Naples Jazz Orchestra.
On Wednesday, the jazz orchestra went before council and asked council members to approve 11 concert dates, the first one being in January. Some council members tossed around the idea of banning coolers so guests would be more likely to visit the shops and restaurants downtown. The idea of crowd control was also brought up.
"I don't know if there's any way for them to control the number of people coming," said Dee Sulick, city council member.
Ultimately, council approved all dates. It was something music leaders were relieved about since things reached a low note at one point.
"Do you think you'll face difficulties next year?" asked reporter Julie Salomone.
"My crystal ball isn't that good, but our commitment is to make it a good season," said Tsaggaris.
Naples City Council approved concerts on the following dates: 1/6/14, 1/13/14, 1/27/14, 2/3/14, 2/10/14, 2/24/14, 3/10/14, 3/24/14, 3/31/14, 4/7/14 and 4/14/14
