Port Charlotte, Fla. - A car found in a Port Charlotte canal Thursday could lead to new developments in a decades old missing persons case. Imagine losing a loved one who was very close to his family and just, for no apparent reason, never came home one night and has not been seen or heard from since 1986. At the time he was 26 years old and drove a limited edition corvette. Thursday, that corvette was found.
Charlotte County Sheriff's investigators say this car was spotted by some workers at about 10 Thursday morning in a canal which sits right beyond these woods. It's near the intersection of Rampart Boulevard and Navigator Road in the Deep Creek section of Port Charlotte.
Sheriff's officials provided a closeup of what it looked like when they hauled it out of the canal. It's a white, 1982 limited edition corvette with custom rims and tinted windows. Deputies ran the plate and determined it's owner is Terrance Paul Beghin who has been missing and was last seen on November 1, 1986.
Investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement say that night Terry, as he was called, left home and then an hour later called one of his roommates and asked him if he needed a ride home from work. Although the roommate said 'yes', Beghin never made it to pick him up.
They also say a search of where Beghin lived revealed that he only had the clothes he was wearing, only had $100 on him and that he was a diabetic and did not take his insulin with him that night. His family said he had to take it once a day and that he was always in close contact with them. At the time of his disappearance foul play was suspected.
Charlotte County deputies say they've notified his next of kin. They also say their investigators are looking into it but say there's no evidence of Beghin's body in the vehicle.
If you have any information on Terry Beghin, investigators with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office would appreciate it if you would give them a call at 941-639-2101.
