TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released quarterback Josh Freeman after failing to trade him.
Freeman was benched last week after a falling out with Bucs Head Coach Greg Schiano.
The National Football League Player's Association is investigating how Freeman's presence in Stage 1 of the league's substance-abuse program became public earlier this week.
The former Kansas State star is owed more than $6 million on his current contract.
Two years ago Freeman enjoyed a break through season throwing 25 touchdown passes and only 6 interceptions. His production went downhill after the hiring of Schiano as head coach last season.
Last season he threw for 27 touchdowns against 17 picks.
