Arrest made in double fatality crash that closed Veterans Pkwy

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Cape Coral police made an arrest in a February double fatality crash that shut down Veterans Memorial Parkways for hours.

After more than seven months of investigation, the Cape Coral Police Department made an arrest yesterday in the deadly crash that left two dead in February.

“The investigation ultimately revealed that Mr. Jones was the operator of the at-fault vehicle,” said Sgt. Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police.

The Cape Coral Police Department arrested 36-year-old Jason Jones of Cape Coral Wednesday afternoon on several felony charges.

Jones is charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

“Controlled substances were found either on his person or within the vehicle,” said Sgt. Coston.

New details in the investigation led to the arrest.

According to police, Jones was driving a Hummer H2 headed westbound on Veterans Memorial Parkway when the truck suddenly swerved and hit a row of bushes.

Police say the hummer then got back on the parkway, crossing the median and several lanes before crashing into a minivan.

Both the driver and passenger in the van were pronounced dead on the scene.

Jones and an 8-year-old boy inside the car at the time of the crash walked away with minor injuries, leaving behind a grizzly scene that shut down the parkway for hours.

“That was probably one of the worst crashes I've seen in my career,” said Sgt. Coston who has been an officer for 16 years.

As Jones awaits his November court date, the Cape Coral Police Department is hoping this break in the investigation leads to closure for the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

"We're hopeful that the families of victims of the crash are able to begin the healing process,” said Coston.
