Approval for Cape Coral fire assessment

By Barry Miller. CREATED Dec 11, 2013 - UPDATED: Dec 11, 2013

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A Lee County Judge has ruled that Cape Coral can enact a fire services assessment in the city which could increase taxes.
Cape Coral's desire for a fire assessment would result in faster emergency response times but at an expense to tax payers.
That would make the approximate cost $150 a year on every property owner whether their lot is improved or not.
Doing this would generate $12 million to fill a budge gap and would pay for upgraded equipment.
The assessment covers 38 percent of fire protection fees which frees up money for the city's general fund for needs and projects.
Opponents of the fire assessment plan have 30 days to appeal to the State Supreme Court.
