Apartment Fire Closes Portion of McGregor in Fort Myers

CREATED Sep. 6, 2013

FORT MYERS -- A three alarm apartment fire has shut down a portion of McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers.

The fire started Friday afternoon in one of the apartments in the six unit building at Courtington Lane. Nobody was home in the unit where the fire started, but fire officials on the scene tell Fox 4 that the age of the building allowed the fire to spread quickly to the other units.

We're told nine people have been displaced by the fire, and investigators describe the building as a "total loss."  Two of the units were vacant at the time.

One firefighter has been taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion, another with low blood pressure.

Due to water pressure issues in the area, a portion of McGregor Blvd. is shut down near Banyan Cove Dr. It is expected to be closed for the next few hours as firefighters continue to put out the fire.

Crews from Sanibel, Cape Coral and and several Fort Myers departments responded to the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the families find shelter, clothes, food and water.

There is no word on what caused the blaze.
