Fort Myers, Fla. -
A heads up if you live in South Fort Myers ... crooks are hitting homes and cars along McGregor Boulevard at an alarming rate. A small area of town has been hit 84 of the last 90 days! It's known as the Whiskey Creek area.
Trish Routte runs Crimestoppers and said, "We've got one neighborhood just a few blocks long and 84 different residential and vehicle burglaries in the course of about three months. Now, that's a lot!"
Almost one a day, mostly at night, as long as it's easy for them. "We believe that literally they're just going street to street jiggling the handles of the car," adds Routte. "If the car is unlocked they have a quick in, take what they can get whether it's electronics, cash, credit cards, wallets, and they go on to the next car."
One victim had a surveillance camera which took still photos. One is attached to this article. "I have a feeling that once we identify him, we will hopefully be able to identify some of the other suspects that may be related to these breakins in the area," Routte explained.
Greg Robel lives in the area, "The word here in the neighborhood is that there's a lot of folks getting hit". He says they are also stealing mail, and not necessarily coming in from the front. "What they also are doing is coming from the water," he added. The police are not on the waterways."
Since all this started he's had cameras installed all around his house. "The way it works is it's just a continuous 24 hour feed of real time what's going on," Robel explained. He said he's not been hit but that he's prepared for it if he's one of the chosen ones.
Routte thinks the thieves are between 16 and 18 years old. If you know anything about them, call Crimestoppers at 1-800-780-tips. You may be eligible for a reward.
