LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - Crime scene tape covered a Lehigh Acres neighborhood after deputies say a woman was shot.
Family members watched helplessly as detectives swept their Lehigh Acres home on 28th Street SW. Neighbor Jose Diaz was walking his dog when he saw the street cordoned off.
"I'm scared," said Diaz, who just moved to the neighborhood from Miami. "I have children, small children.
Investigators combed the scene after they say a woman was shot during a domestic disturbance. Her name has not been released. The suspect is in custody and knows the victim.
"How did this start, over a fight?" asked Fox 4 reporter Gabrielle Sarann to Sgt. David Velez, with the Lee County Sheriff's Office. "At this time, it is an ongoing investigation. I do not have that information."
Investigators rushed in crime scene units and spent more than four hours collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
"There's a lot of traffic but i don't know who lives there," said Chantel White, who lives a few blocks away. "But i know there's a lot of people over there."
As detectives searched for answers, neighborhood children returned home from school. Neighbor Rod McCray had just picked his son up from the bus stop.
"Your main concern is the kids," said McCray.
And at the house, neighbors say, there are several.
The victim was taken to the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
