One arrested in YMCA theft: Canoe recovered
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Detectives arrested a Punta Gorda man on Wednesday on Grand Theft charges related to thefts from the YMCA Center in Charlotte Harbor.
Detectives arrested 22-year-old Andrew Ahrens on charges of Grand Theft and Violation of Probation. He is being held without bond.
Monday, the YMCA Center on Bayshore Road reported that a silver canoe and six red and white kayaks had been taken from their camp sometime over the weekend.
Detectives assigned to the case received information from a patrol deputy that witnesses had heard a man at Ponce DeLeon Park bragging about having stolen items from the YMCA.
They obtained statements from the witnesses and went to the man’s house where they found a canoe that had been spray painted a different color.
Detectives are looking for a second man, 20-year-old Taylor L. Hendrix of Punta Gorda.
According to police Hendrix was with Ahrens at about the same time as the thefts.
