NAPLES, Fla.- Two people died in an early morning crash on I-75 on Thursday.
Flashing sirens lit up the darkness on I-75 after emergency crews rushed to a crash where two people were tossed from their vehicles.
"This morning we got a report of a vehicle crash off ramp of I-75 and Pine Ridge, exit 107," said James Cunningham, North Naples Fire.
FHP says the truck driver 48-year-old Alexander Brener of Land O Lakes slammed into 16-year-old Jannelle Arvelaez of Lehigh Acres just after 3am. The crash killed both drivers.
"The crash investigation right now is pointing towards the van was stopped for reasons unknown in outside lane with hazard lights on when semi struck the van," said Lt. Greg Bueno, Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash caused major traffic delays on I-75 southbound. It was shut down for quite some time following the crash. Eventually two lanes were reopen, but traffic still moved slowly. The off ramp remained closed where the semi had overturned. The semi was hauling a bleach solution.
"It's estimated by the fire department that approximately 3,000 gallons were spilled not a personal safety issue right now," said Lt. Bueno.
The liquid had from the overturned semi had to be transferred to another tanker. FHP is warning drivers of the potential dangers whenever you stop on the interstate.
"Any event you have a mechanical issue pull of road completely," said Bueno.
FHP is still investigating the crash.
