CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Florida Department of Transportation held a public information meeting to give residents a final look at the last phase of the Pine Island Road expansion project.
Construction will begin in just a few weeks. Pine Island Road between Burnt Store Road and Chiquita Boulevard will be widened from two lanes to four lanes.
The job also includes a paved bike lane, storm water ponds, left turn lanes, and U-turn lanes. The project team said these improvements will make Pine Island Road safer for drivers.
The project cost $8.1 million, but the state is paying the majority of the bill. Cape Coral is chipping in less than $1 million.
The Florida Department of Transportation said the road expansion will bring an economic boost to the area. Not only will it bring more traffic to businesses that are already along Pine Island Road, but will also open up opportunities for new business to move in.
The project is expected to be finished in Fall 2014. During the construction period, work will be done during the day and will require periodic nighttime and overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
